Luanbai
卵白

Based on qingbai ware, the luanbai (eggwhite) glazed porcelain was also produced in Jingdezhen in the Yuan dynasty. With a lower quicklime content and higher sodium oxide content than qingbai, the viscosity and opacity of the glaze was increased so that objects appeared as white as a goose egg. Objects were often rendered in small sizes and decorated with moulded floral or dragon motifs. Produced for official use under the supervision of the Porcelain Bureau, luanbai wares were usually marked with the Chinese characters indicating the institution for which they were produced. Cao Zhao’s The Essential Criteria of Antiquities, published in 1387 during the Ming dynasty, states ‘among the small-footed wares with moulded decoration from the Yuan dynasty, those bearing the characters shufu (meaning commissioned by the Privy Council) are of the highest quality.’ Luanbai wares were made for ritual use, official use or as gifts for officials from the Emperor. If there were excess amounts of clay and spare labour, the Bureau would also fire other wares as commodities.
